We had crawfish in the river behind our house in the UP of Michigan, but I never thought of eating them. We spelled it crayfish but I think that's the same thing.
I'm so tired. I don't know why I get SO tired with so little effort lately. I did a bit of canning and made a pie this afternoon; now I feel totally beat and I didn't even cook dinner. I need to get out there and do some garden clean-up; the first planted cucumber vines need to be pulled up and some mulch applied to that bed. I guess I'll do that tomorrow. I need to get an eye exam. I'm always straining to see things lately, trying to find that sweet spot in my progressive lenses... really aggravating. I'm thinking that I need some tweaking in my prescription. It's always something. I've got a dishpan full of cucumbers that I need to do something with. I'm thinking I'll try fermenting again though I wasn't happy with my previous attempts at fermented pickles. It's just so much easier than canning. After I get my second wind I might go downstairs and toss some of those cukes into fermenting jars and wish them well.
I love crawfish and used to get them out of my creek when I lived in the mountains. I fixed them Cajun style and they were the excellent!
I didn't like them much until we moved to Baton Rouge in the 1990s. Then I developed a liking for them since crawfish boils are such a big deal in southern Louisiana. A lot of rice farmers have crawfish "farms" as a secondary income since they have those flooded fields for growing rice.
They taste very much like shrimp to me. When cooked they look like little mini-lobsters. Come to my house and I'll make you some etouffee!
Sorry, I'm not etough enough to eat etouffee. It might be different kind of crawfish. The ones I have tasted here taste like mud.... black, stinky mud.
I was cleaning up the kitchen after making one last jar of pickles earlier, reached into the sudsy dishwater and sliced my thumb on a knife. It was gushing blood so we managed to get it packed with gauze and 4 bandaids. I managed to finish cooking dinner wearing a disposable plastic glove but my husband is handling cleanup. It's hard to type because it's my right thumb that I use for the space bar.
So you have eaten black stinky mud? If you ever tasted clear creek ones, then you would be hooked. They are as good as any wild caught shrimp and way better than farm shrimp. They are great for the old man since they work as an aphrodisiac. Zek used to go harvest enough for a big boil using his secret Cajun sauce. I am here to tell you, the aphrodisiac thing isn't a old wives tale.
I went to the Chinese buffet today, recalling that they have crawfish. In preparation, last night I watched a video on how to eat them. I might try the tail meat one day, but I hate to waste the rest. This subject brings back memories of people watching me pick a crab and telling me that it's too much work for that tiny bit of meat, the difference being that they were wrong about that and I am right about this. Regarding sucking the juices from the body...uh, maybe next lifetime, if I come back as a muskrat. This is the only food item I've encountered so far that's probably gonna stay on that bucket list. Aren't there filters & such in those things? There are in crabs and you gotta avoid them. Do you and your husband just eat the tail meat, or do you also suck the [whatever] out of the body? Inquiring minds don't really want to know, but they gotta ask.
The tail meat is the primary focus; it's the head that is sucked if you are so inclined. (I am not inclined.) I don't believe I'd head to a Chinese restaurant if crawfish was my goal. You need to find a bonafide cajun restaurant, cher.
