Looks like we finally have a new speaker. Mike Johnson (LA) and it only took one vote.

Yeah, because all the snakes that had voted for Kevin anonymously, deserted him when they called for everyone to go on record.

I feel good about Mike Johnson BUT this is extreme.. A 10 yr old who is impgrenated SHOULD NOT be FORCED to be a baby maker.,

Now I'm wondering if it is the Truth about Johnson's position.

It sounds like an attempt to discredit him, but I have no direct knowledge.

Regardless, he does not create law.

@Joy Martin Where did you hear this? The only reference to this was on the Democrats.org website. I know there has been talk from others about prosecuting doctors who violate state law against the practice.

The people who rushed Roe to the courts created the perfect wedge issue.

    Abortion is NOT "reproductive care".

I had never heard of him before. He has lots of baggage. A gift to the Democrats in the 2024 House election.

OK, ya know what's funny? There is a law on the books in Wisconsin for just this issue and punishment from the 1800's and we did not even realize it of late until all the hoopla about abortion. I remember clinics in Milwaukee, when I was in school, giving out birth control and performing abortions after Roe v Wade.
And now you have to go to other states if you want an abortion, I guess.
But Mike Johnson is a Contstitutionalist, which I find comforting. If he follows the law, that is good. Some laws might need tweaking or removal. Not his specific job.

We were lucky to have such perceptive statesmen write our constitution. The really unfortunate thing is that we have an illiterate population of voters when it comes to the constitution. They don’t understand it’s importance as supreme law of the land, they don’t understand it and the don’t care about it.

Congress has also delegated (probably against the Constitution) many of its powers to the Executive Branch, so it is not just the ignorant electorate that is the problem. It is also the laziness and greed of our elected officials. The Founders believed we would vote out lazy, greedy individuals and prosecute them afterward, so term limits were not necessary. Here is where the ignorant electorate comes into play. Also, the educational system has taken measures to ensure that the American people don't understand how their government works.

True. I think it’s telling that our “leaders” reached down into school curricula and carefully plucked out civics. Who is served by raising kids lacking knowledge of civics? Obviously those that want a population of sheep.

BTW, for those that don’t know, there is an effort to restore it.

    https://thedreyfussinitiative.org/

    1. Why did we remove from our public schools the subject of civics?
    2. Why have we made it impossible to give our children even a glimpse of how to run the government before it’s their turn to run the government?
    3. Why have we kept all this completely unknowable by our progeny for the last 50 years?
    4. Why have we refused even to discuss this discard?
    5. Why did we do this inarguably stupid thing, which the experience of the last 50 years has already told us is as close to a guarantee of chaos as one can get, and continue to do it, even as you read this page?”

I understand Mike Johnson is very much against pumping unlimited funds into Ukraine, so perhaps that will slow or stop...finally.

I predict that "reproductive care" is going to keep many Republicans from being elected in the upcoming elections. And I'd like to personally slap the individual who came up with the euphemism "reproductive care" for abortion. Seriously?? Are snowflakes unable to utter the term abortion? I consider a pap smear to be "reproductive care," and as far as I know there are no laws against that. Yet.

Why aren't men's "reproductive care" issues being considered by Congress? Only laws to control women's lives are germane?

If the Republicans don't ease up on this abortion issue, they will never win another election. I am in favor of most of what the Rs stand for, but I am also in favor of abortions up to 12 weeks. I intend to contact every R candidate that I can find a contact address for and tell them exactly that. I'm too old to ever need an abortion but if I did need one, I think that decision should be up to me. I think every woman should have the same right to make her decision.

That's kind of like saying that Dr. Kevorkian provided senior care, or that Dr. Mengele specialized in pediatric twin care.
