TurboTax and HRBlock both have online tax prep, and probably many more, but those are the two biggest. You can even have a person do it (my wife does this) if you download your documents to a taxpro, then approve online when they are done. If you just have a simple return with W2s, 1099s, etc., you can just do it yourself.
I used FreeTaxUsa last year and this year They do Fed for free and state for minimal fee. They found a deduction state that I'd never heard of so I gotta refund even tho I'd never paid state tax.
This and the others mentioned are on-line are they not ? I know many do, but I just do not care for putting that much financial information on the net.
Same as me. If income is below a certain amount, you don't have to file federal. In PA, even if you don't have to pay, you still have to submit a return. I can get some property tax money back if I file the rebate paperwork and show documentation.
I don't file. Right now, all of my income is non-taxable Social Security. If I started taking out investment income, I would try to manage keeping it below the level where it will impact my income taxes. In any event, we would not be talking about a large sum of money. Virginia generally follows the Fed when it comes to determining tax status of income, except Virginia exempts the first $12,000 of other retirement income (like 401k withdrawals) from state income taxes...but we have a robust Sales Tax system, and pay real estate and personal property (vehicles) taxes every year. So it's just a matter of which pocket gets picked and how deep the hand goes.
I don't think Ohio has any no file situation ? But I am going to look into it. I live on a private pension income. I have some investments but I do not draw an income from them. I just let them 'ride' to increase the investment amount.
Boy, Ohio doesn't make it easy. -In OH, you gotta file if Adjusted OH Taxable Income > $0 -In VA, you gotta file if Adjusted VA Taxable Income > $11,950 (for a single person) And even if you do not have to file an Ohio state income tax return due to a low income level, you may be subject to a "School District Income Tax Liability," in which case you still have to file an Ohio state income tax return as the base document to tack the School District Tax filing to. (Virginia has no School District Tax...such tribute is paid via our Real Estate Taxes and lottery proceeds, regardless of our income level.) Here's a link to the Ohio stuff . Oh...and no one should take tax advice from an internet stranger
Fortunately, Alaska doesn't have any state income or state-wide sales tax. There are local option sales taxes in some towns, however, and many of the organized boroughs have property tax but not all.
