In the first episode of the documentary The Ascent of Man, Bronowski explains that two square miles of animals and plants were needed to sustain up to two prehistoric adults, and they had to move constantly by hunting and gathering.

Also, it was the fusion of both sides of the brain (which gave them the gift of communication) plus the opposing digit (the thumb, which allowed them to make things with significant levels of precision) which gave prehistoric man incredible power: with fashioned weapons and working in packs, he could take down animals many times his size, and thus provide himself with even more nutrients.

Thus began the ascent of man. Tadaaah!

Here are some of them in action:

Even more amazing is the fact that Germans of the era even knew what a lion looked like. Must have been a different global environment.

My bet is that prehistoric women would have worn many different jewelry things as well as bones. . Seashells etc. Women, being women, just naturally love to decorate themselves.

We know that early man captured naturally occuring fire such as lightening strikes. What fascinates me is how he learned to CREATE fire.

    The Progress of Fire Control
    [IMG]
"The human control of fire likely required the cognitive ability to conceptualize the idea of fire, which itself has been recognized in chimpanzees; great apes have been known to prefer their foods cooked. The fact that experimentation with fire occurred during the early days of humanity should come as no surprise."

What ideas do you have on how humans first invented a way to make fire ?

Perhaps by trying to drill a hole in a piece of wood, using another piece of wood ?
