It was slow for me for a while today too but we had more than 700 "guests" on at the time, which generally indicates a DDOS attack. DDOS attacks hit sporadically, sometimes slowing things down for an hour or more before they move on to annoy someone else's website, but it sounds like your problem has been something else.
