Oh I get nervous when I have to take a pet to the vet. It is always so costly. But what can we do? The guilt is worse than the vet bill.

Well he is my furry child. I am not going to have him suffering and in pain. BTW, he has improved quite a bit, yay! but yesterday when I was reading his "discharge summary" it says he is supposed to stay on the food long term...:( no other treats or snacks. The vet in person,,was a bit more wishy washy or flexible said..let's clear this up first. before anything else.sigh, I am gonna have to find some cheap supplier of this expenso..grub!

It's a good thing at least that your cat will eat the food, some animals are picky...what do people do then?

I'm glad to hear kitty is doing better.

Probably best to keep your kitty on the recommended food. I pay well over $50.00 for the bag my cats eat. It lasts 3 months.

I never fed my other two cats canned but got these two started on a "can treat" of Fancy Feast once a day. About 50 cents a can so no big deal. But with little miss fish allergy they are eating a fancy feast size can of Wilderness fish free daily at $1.35 a can. Working full time I don't care, people spend money on all kinds of other stuff. But in retirement it could be an issue. I don't want to take their can away, it's a way to get extra liquid in cats and they look forward too it. Code for badger me for it. :)

I used to work for Blue Buffalo, who makes the Wilderness brand of cat food. My cats do very well on it and yes, wet food is particularly good for ensuring that you cat gets enough liquid, especially important when they grow older.

Ah, this is the thread I was missing the other day. I'm glad your kitty seems to be responding to the new food. Which one was it? I used to have to by WD for my diabetic cat when I had him, and that and the other treatments were quite expensive. There's no way I could afford that these days, unfortunately. I picked up a sample of I think it was ZD at the vet's last time I was there, and the cats seemed to like it, although it stunk. It was for digestive issues, so I'm sure it was gentle on their tummies, and they'd probably like it long term, but I just tried it out to see whether they'd like it. At some point, I'm hoping to be able to afford better food. I have started mixing Iams in with their regular stuff, and they seem o.k. with that. I tried Fancy Feast, and one - two liked it, but the other seemed to get sick from it, so I stopped buying it.

Yeah, he does not like the wet brand of this food. He wouldn't even touch it. I am going to have to take it back and see what other brands I can try. He seems to enjoy the dry, but I think he needs the liquid in the wet, since I really don't think he drinks as much water as he should. He generally prefers faucet drinking to water bowls. Kitty has a new morning routine, where he sits on the bathroom vanity counter, and knocks over a cup. That is supposed to be my signal he wants water I think!:)

OH Kitty is eating Royal Canin SO version. Apparently, they also have the SO treats so I will pick some of those up, as kitty and I are missing treat time. I will be out tommorrow, so I guess I will have a convo in the vet office as they I can return the food if he doesn't like it. I will also quiz them about what other wet food brands I might be able to use. I had an issue with my dog when I had him, he suddenly developed an allergy to corn and wheat so I had to start feeding him designer dog food which was more expensive.

My vet stated a way to get extra water in cats is to leave cups around with water as they may think that is something special. However, if cats like to knock things over, like cups of water (which I know they will do) that would become a problem.

I rinse the cat out with a small amount of water and then put that on the plate with their can contents. But if your kitty doesn't like canned..... And the fact is, I don't think all cats do.

I've thought they should invent "cat water" some fish flavored water, you can get a cat to lap up. Maybe your kitty would eat some small scraps with water added?

Cats and kidneys/urinary can be an issue. A vet also once told me cats have a flawed kidney system in relation to other species.

He isn't supposed to eat anything other than the special food. I do try to add a bit of water to it. I don't think he is dehydrated, but probably the more water he drinks the better. I took back the canned food he wouldn't eat today, and got some "special" cat treats. OF course, he has decided he doesn't like them either! However, he is a pretty good size kitty, I don't think he is gonna let himself starve. He is eating the SO dry food fine.
