On Saturday, we watched an episode of Axis TV showing the big rock bands during Vietnam Era: Boston, REO Speedwagon and Styx. We have music (CD) from all three.
I have to say I was there for 3 consecutive years and never even heard of those mentioned ;0) Now if you want Vietnam era music then start with all the LA and California bands, like Big Brother and The Holding Company w/ Janice Joplan. Jimi Hendrix, Iron Butterfly, Tommy James and the Shondales, there are so many in that era it is hard to remember all of them. Every time someone returned from leave in the states they usually brought with them the latest albums and would share with everyone. Most people had tape decks but they took up a lot of space and most never reached their owners when they left if they allowed it to be shipped free of charge, it went to storage warehouses Fort Louis and other places and you can imagine where most of the stuff got new owners, if you know what I mean, it wasn't the Army managing the warehouses it was the guy who would steal anything he wanted. However you could check out the latest albums from the camp USO if you made sure to return it after recording it. Our little club had sound proof cubicles that you could listen to your albums, it wasn't a big club but adequate enough. I had my own record player and a stack of albums with just about everything recorded over 5 years. Some guys were smart and paid freight to ship their very expensive rigs home. Me I gave all my stuff away and left with the clothes on my back, all I wanted to do was get home the sooner the better. To this day I can remember exactly what time we flew over the Vietnamese coastline and I stood up to look out the window and I had that moment when it looked so beautiful and it was a fitting end for me. I doubt I helped anyone there but it was just a job, more people are killed from auto accidents today and from thugs than the Vietnam War. Live your life as it was intended and don't worry about something that you have no control over. A good outlook helped. Plus I sure wasn't going to go to that cold weather in Korea, that is the only reason I stayed so long in Vietnam. I learned very early on that all the flight crews were being sent to South Korea to make up for the troops they stole from there to come to Vietnam. ;0)
I watched the Showtime series, "The First Lady" and enjoyed it, but I really loved the theme song they chose... This Land is Your Land, by Sharon Jones and the DAP Kings.
