I don't believe that anyone should be entitled to welfare either, but that doesn't mean that I don't think there's a place for welfare or that no one should receive it. I don't believe that anyone is entitled to a job, but I certainly don't believe that no one should be working. People strive to become qualified for the jobs that they want, and the same should be true of citizenship. If someone wants to come to this country, they should offer something that we need beyond a willingness to work for less. If Americans won't harvest crops, then it would make sense to give temporary work VISAs for farm labor but they don't need citizenship for that. If someone wants to become a citizen, then they should offer something that we need, beyond a willingness to vote Democrat, such as a skill that can benefit this country. In the past, the United States has encouraged immigration in order to find people to work in the mines or to populate some of the more extreme areas of the country, such as the Dakotas and Wyoming. We cannot provide welfare to the world, and there are limits to the number of people our country can support.

As it is, we're importing immigrants as we used to import slaves, and for much the same reason. Businesses benefit from cheap labor, but at the expense of the American workforce. Sure, things will cost more if employers are encouraged to pay more, but we'll have a healthier economy. There will be jobs for those who are able to work and, without supporting millions of immigrants who aren't working, as well as Americans who are unable to find work, our welfare system won't be overburdened, as it is now.

I agree with you on those things but the reality of Americans picking crops and our produce not costing a fortune is that I just can't see it.

Maybe a better solution is denying aid to illegals. It would be cruel to kids but then maybe they wouldn't come.

Maybe other states should start producing more crops. California produces at least 75-80% of Americas produce.

Everything is agriculture here...many workers are needed.

I've already conceded that picking crops may be one area where temporary work VISAs might make sense, and we should deny aid to illegals.

Donald Trump is a newbie in politics but a veteran in business. I'm sure he had done some pencil pushing on the costing of that great wall he was proposing. But on second thought, it may just be bravado for now and a deeper evaluation have to be done in order to finalize that project. At any rate, the border down south needs an innovative improvement to curtail the illegal entry of migrants. And for me, stricter border patrols will do the job much better than a great wall.
