Thanks, @Holly Saunders , for the link. That looks very interesting. The English are second to none when it comes to opening museums.
I recall a doco about this Thomas. The free West were miles from the technology of Germany leading into WW2. Hitler had ample time to rearm Germany during the mid to late 30s.. under the subterfuge of talking peace. Germany produced the first semi automatic rifle the Walther and Mauser Gewehr 41. Later the first mass produced assault rifle Sturmgewehr 44. The German- designed Panzer was a superior tank to anything the Western allies had.. The western allies ruled the skies tho tho with the superb Brit-made Spitfire aircraft which out manoeuvered the German Messerschmitt bf 109. Goering said if he'd have had five squadrons of Spitfires he'd have won the Battle of Britain. Not sure about that..as the Brits and her allies had superb pilots to fly the Spits. The US Flying Fortress and Brits Lancaster bombers were also probably superior to anything Germany built. The allies tho had nothing to compare with Germany's 'ace in the deck',the terrifying Junkers Stuka dive bomber. Late in the war Germany produced the first prototype of the modern missile the V2. and the first jet-powered aircraft to see combat the Messerschmitt Me 262. One wonders how Germany did not win the European War. I suppose having a meglomaniacal leader did not help.
We should be glad it didn't. But it took two leaders the calibre of Churchill and Roosevelt (not to forget his brilliant advisor Harry Hopkins, the "half man") to stop them. I don't want to imagine what would have happened if wrens had made prey where eagles dared not perch. OTOH, the German weapons you mentioned were not as reliable and superior as some people would have liked them to be. IMO, the M40 submachine gun as one of the standard assault rifles should then be mentioned, too.
Yes, but the names of the real subs were U 110, U 559, and U 505 from which different models of Enigma machines were captured.
The U 505 is on permanent display in the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry. I've taken the tour. Hal
In his book Adolf Galland stated that Goring asked him what he needed to defeat the RAF Galland reply was "A squadron of Spitfires." An Interesting war hero. https://www.luftwaffe.cz/gallanda.html
The Supermarine Spitfire used the same Allison engine as did the P-51 Mustang, except the Mustang had a 2-stage supercharger which enabled higher altitudes than the Spit. Both great birds, slightly superior to the excellent Messerschmitt BF 109. Hal
Sorry tend to differ to your statement about the engine. The Spitfire Always had a RR Merlin engine Replacing the Allison with a Rolls-Royce Merlin resulted in the P-51B/C (Mustang Mk III) model and transformed the aircraft's performance at altitudes above 15,000 ft (4,600 m)
The Stuka's Siren struck fear in the hearts of those who heard it as much as the bomb that struck shortly thereafter! (The Ju87 Stuka carried a single 250KG bomb.) Hal
