I wonder how many people are aware that retirement age has already been raised?

Which makes sense, I guess. When SS began, not many people lived beyond 70ish. Now a lot of people live to be 85/90 or higher. And most of us are in good enough shape to work longer.

Our welfare system used to be called social security ..then the government merged Medicare / tax office and various other government departments together and it became Centerlink .

I believe it was to catch people who were claiming welfare while working and not reporting that income so they were double dipping and also catching up with dead beat parent's non payments of Maintenance I believe all those types of payments are all registered / part of Centerlink as well .

Anybody a victim of this? Here is a 60 Minutes video about people getting overpayments sometimes over decades, then being notified they had to repay the mistakes made by SS in 60 days or so. One kid with cerebral palsy found out his mother made a mistake when he was 11 years old--over 20 years ago--and he now has to repay those funds from all those years ago. Most involve people who continue to work after retirement.

i been watching this because when social security told me what my monthly amt will be...that amt was larger than what expected...my daughter handles everything and wanted them to recheck all their calculations and understand how they got that number....
2nd phone call...they had no record of first call...they say their system doesn't have that sort of info....
person inquiring needs to have name of person they talked to....
    Weird...archaic system...or just evasive answer...she's contacted since....they told her how they calculated it...swear it's correct...we'll see..

Somehow my youngest brother was getting some S.S. payments when he was a minor, due to our dad's death. He later got one of those "Pay us back now!" letters. At the time my older brother was married to a woman who worked for the SSA her entire career. She took care of it. I don't know the details.

I believe the "Working into retirement but collecting SS" issue is a self-reporting deficiency. I did income taxes for a number of years. I've seen all sorts of good people get caught up in the government machinery that the government is not accountable to explain.

I would think it would mainly be younger people they'd try to scam. They have a whole lifetime to contribute to the crooked government. Older folks best pay attention to increases, and make sure everything is within the normal percent range we are supposed to get. Keep records, which I'm sure most of you do, I hope. I would even leave it all up to a "trusted" lawyer

Rather than spending the (fun) time waiting on the phone to Social Security, sign up for an account at:
    https://www.ssa.gov/

There, you will find actual government data explaining what you'll get, etc.

P.S. Just don't ever forget your password; getting access after that goes through the U.S. Mail (to your last known address, I believe), and is a real drag.

Funny seeing this a.m. @Jenna Parnellson since I had an early morning dream about calling Social Security and they couldn't find my SS# or my name. I kept saying "what?" and then said my full name with middle name included, where I was born, and she still couldn't find me. When I woke from the dream after hanging up on her after a few choice words, my first thought was, hey, this could be a good thing, I don't exist, lol!!
